Gaylen FloyAs a kid my family thought I was a klutz. There were always Band-Aids on my knees and elbows. As I got older I graduated to crutches and trips to the emergency room. My dad encouraged me to please be more careful playing sports. Playing the net in volleyball was hard, but by my senior year of college I would completely lose the ball. (Very embarrassing.) So I went to a specialist who flipped out when I flunked the peripheral vision test. His reaction made me feel like a freak. After 4 days of testing at UC Davis Medical Center they told me I was going blind, shouldn't play sports, drive a car or have children and then they sent me home. Depression hit me like a truck. I dropped out of school only 9 credits short of a B.A. in Fine Art. Sure God loves me and has a wonderful plan for my life, but this sucks. What kind of a cruel joke is God playing? My early 20's were an unhappy blur, trying to shut out the problem and prove I could do anything a sighted person could. It didn't work. Have you ever noticed how God brings certain people into your life to show His grace? I made some really great friends at a church in Spokane, friends I could trust. One Sunday I was asked to give my testimony as part of a choral oratorio on the love of God. The scripture that got my attention was I John 4:18 "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has torment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." I shared with the congregation about the RP and how God doesn't want my pretense, but my heart. At 44 and a few fractures later, I'm still bumping into things.
