What is a White Cane and what is it used for? This may sound like a stupid question to V.I.P.'s, or the blind, but we all know differently (Those who are newly VIPeed, you will soon find out.) For those of you who are fully sighted this is for you. WHAT IS A CANE?A cane is a long stick covered with a white/silver reflective coating. It has a red strip on the end and comes with "various tips--some large, some small -- depending on a person's needs. Their are some canes that are a little shorter in length, but for this application I'll deal with full length canes only. WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?A cane is used to indicate to sighted people that the person using them can't see very well, or maybe not at all. It is also an extension of their eyesight, through which, they feel their way around. WHAT DO I DO IF I SEE SOMEONE WITH A CANE?a) Get the hell out of his/her way. This may seem like a rude answer. Well it is, because V.I.P.'s know all to well how sighted people react to a person with a cane. b) Don't stand there with your bare-face hanging out staring at them. A lot of V.I.P.'s still have some vision left, and even though you may not realize it they can see you. Besides, didn't your mother ever tell you that it's "RUDE TO STARE!" WHAT DOES A PERSON WITH A CANE, AND A DOG ON A HARNESS MEAN?If you need an answer to this one, go to the back of the class and stand with your head facing the corner. Oh, and there's a hat for you to wear. It says "DUNCE". WHAT A CANE DOES NOT MEAN.It does not mean that the person is DEAF. So please, there is no need to talk "louder". |
